It wasn't stone. It wasn't welded steel. It wasn't traditional sculpture. They thought it was craft, or something else, but not art. They couldn't define it in the early Fifties when I was starting out.
Ruth AsawaRead
Art is doing. Art deals directly with life.
Interpretation
Art is an active engagement with the world around us, reflecting and influencing life itself.
Ruth Asawa's quote emphasizes that art is not a passive or abstract concept but rather an active and direct engagement with life. Through creation, artists interact with their environment and experiences, transforming them into a medium that can communicate emotions, thoughts, and social realities. This connection between art and life illustrates how creativity serves as both a reflection of and a catalyst for the human experience.
In practice

I cannot speak for more than an hour exclusively about poetry. At that point, life itself takes over again.
Collage is the noble conquest of the irrational, the coupling of two realities, irreconcilable in appearance, upon a plane which apparently does not suit them.
This is what the difference is between Hong Kong and Chinese cinema - Chinese cinema was made for their own communities. It was for propaganda. But Hong Kong made films to entertain, and they know how to communicate with international audiences.
I see drawings and pictures in the poorest of huts and the dirtiest of corners.
The purpose of Art is to create enthusiasm.
I'm looking at a dead event and trying to give it new life. In a sense, I'm a taxidermist.
