Every day that you don't practice is one day longer before you achieve greatness
Ben HoganRead
It is very dangerous to have your self-worth riding on your results as an athlete.
Interpretation
Self-worth should not depend on athletic performance.
This quote by Jim Courier emphasizes the importance of separating one's identity and self-esteem from their achievements as an athlete. When athletes tie their self-worth to performance outcomes, they risk detrimental effects on their mental health and overall well-being. It serves as a reminder that personal value should not be dictated by success or failure in sports.
In practice
In a motivational speech for aspiring athletes.
Every day that you don't practice is one day longer before you achieve greatness
Without hard work, nothing grows but weeds.
...the question, Why try for greatness? would seem almost tautological. If you're doing something you care that much about, and you believe in its purpose deeply enough, then it is impossible to imagine not trying to make it great. It's just a given.
Never forget that you are one of a kind. Never forget that if there weren't any need for you in all your uniqueness to be on this earth, you wouldn't be here in the first place. And never forget, no matter how overwhelming life's challenges and problems seem to be, that one person can make a difference in the world. In fact, it is always because of one person that all the changes that matter in the world come about. So be that one person.
Raising your level of performance requires a proper mentality and meaning from within. This gives you the ability and drive to work on the things necessary to go to a higher level. When people ask me how to raise their level of performance, the first thing I ask is, How important is it to you?
For all of us today, the battle is in our hands. The road ahead is not altogether a smooth one. There are no broad highways to lead us easily and inevitably to quick solutions. We must keep going.
