Facts are not science - as the dictionary is not literature.
Interpretation
Facts alone do not constitute science, just as a dictionary does not equate to literature.
This quote emphasizes that while facts are essential for understanding the world, they do not encompass the entire essence of science, just as a dictionary provides definitions but lacks the artistic and narrative qualities that literature embodies. Studying organisms at a molecular level was totally compelling because it was moving from being a naturalist, which was the 19th-century kind of science, to being very focused and really getting to the heart of these molecules.
The atom can't be seen, yet its existence can be proved. And it is simple to prove that it can't ever be seen. It has to be studied by indirect evidence - and the technical difficulty has been compared to asking a man who has never seen a piano to describe a piano from the sound it would make falling downstairs in the dark.
