I've run into more discrimination as a woman than as an Indian.
Wilma MankillerRead
Being an Irishwoman means many things to me. An Irishwoman is strong and feisty. She has guts and stands up for what she believes in. She believes she is the best at whatever she does and proceeds through life with that knowledge. She can face any hazard that life throws her way and stay with it until she wins. She is loyal to her kinsmen and accepting of others. She's not above a sock in the jaw if you have it coming.
Interpretation
Being an Irishwoman embodies strength, resilience, and loyalty.
This quote by Maureen O'Hara articulates the essence of being an Irishwoman as a combination of strength, courage, and determination. It highlights the unwavering belief in oneself, the ability to confront challenges, and the loyalty to both family and friends, all wrapped in a spirited personality that does not shy away from conflict when necessary. The quote serves to inspire individuals, particularly women, to embrace their inner strength and individuality.
In practice
This quote can be shared as a motivational speech at a women's empowerment event.
I've run into more discrimination as a woman than as an Indian.
Homophobia and the closet are allies. Like an unhealthy co-dependent relationship they need each other to survive. One plays the victim living in fear and shame while the other plays the persecutor policing what is ‘normal’. The only way to dismantle homophobia is for every gay man and lesbian in the world to come out and live authentic lives. Once they realise how normal we are and see themselves in us….the controversy is over.
People would say, 'Girls don't play hockey. Girls don't skate.' I would say, 'Watch this.'
You can kill a revolutionary but you can never kill the revolution.
Friends have asked how I came to engender this American antagonism. My prodigious sin was, and still is, being a non-conformist. Although I am not a Communist I refused to fall in line by hating them. Secondly, I was opposed to the Committee on Un-American Activities - a dishonest phrase to begin with, elastic enough to wrap around the throat and strangle the voice of any American citizen whose honest opinion is a minority of one.
Now, I've always known that there were bullies in the world. We've seen a lot of it in politics lately as well as in daily life. You see it where people who may be stronger, or bigger, or better with verbiage than other folks... show off. To me, that's what bullying is, showing off. It's saying, I'm better than you, I can take you down. Not just physically, but emotionally.
