From one point of view we can say that we have human bodies and are practicing the Buddha's teachings and are thus much better than insects. But we can also say that insects are innocent and free from guile, where as we often lie and misrepresent ourselves in devious ways in order to achieve our ends or better ourselves. From this perspective, we are much worse than insects.

Anything that contradicts experience and logic should be abandoned.

When ever Buddhism has taken root in a new land, there has been a certain variation in the style in which it is observed. The Buddha himself taught differently according to the place, the occasion and the situation of those who were listening to him.

One has to try to develop one's inner feelings, which can be done simply by training one's mind. This is a priceless human asset and one you don't have to pay income tax on!

During the day extend that attitude to everyone you meet. Practice cherishing the "simplest" person (clerks, attendants, etc) or people you dislike.

In the final analysis, the hope of every person is simply peace of mind.

Religious belief is not a precondition either of ethical conduct or of happiness.

When you think everything is someone else's fault, you will suffer a lot. When you realize that everything springs only from yourself, you will learn both peace and joy.

If there is love, there is hope that one may have real families, real brotherhood, real equanimity, real peace. If the love within your mind is lost and you see other beings as enemies, then no matter how much knowledge or education or material comfort you have, only suffering and confusion will ensue.

Many Tibetans sacrifice their lives.

Even when a person has all of life's comforts - good food, good shelter, a companion - he or she can still become unhappy when encountering a tragic situation.

I have always had this view about the modern education system: we pay attention to brain development, but the development of warmheartedness we take for granted.

I always tell people that religious institutions and political institutions should be separate. So while I'm telling people this, I myself continue with them combined. Hypocrisy!

I never dreamt, in my dream, I'm Dalai Lama.

I think there's every reason this 21st century will be much happier.

I describe myself as a simple Buddhist monk. No more, no less.

I am confident I will set foot again in Tibet in my lifetime.

There are techniques of Buddhism, such as meditation, that anyone can adopt.

Some mischievous people always there. Last several thousand years, always there. In future, also.

I totally disagree with the view that the Tibet struggle will die, and there will be no hope for Tibet, after the Dalai Lama passes away.

It is difficult to violently suppress people in the long run, as the example of the Soviet Union and the Eastern European countries has shown.
