There are times in life when, instead of complaining, you do something about your complaints.

I think that you certainly don't have to be aged and travel the world to write a poem.
Interpretation
One does not need to be old or have extensive experiences to create meaningful poetry.
Rita Dove suggests that the essence of poetry is not tied to age or worldly experiences. Instead, it implies that anyone, regardless of their background or stage in life, can express themselves through poetry, capturing emotions and thoughts that resonate with others. Creativity and artistic expression do not require elaborate adventures but rather a willingness to observe and interpret the world around us.
In practice
In a workshop about creative writing, one could use this quote to inspire participants to write without fear of their experiences.
There are times in life when, instead of complaining, you do something about your complaints.
Without imagination we can go nowhere. And imagination is not restricted to the arts. Every scientist I have met who has been a success has had to imagine.
As an African-American, as a woman, I think that I've been sensitized to the way in which history privileges the white male and the way in which certain aspects of history, the things that we are taught in school, the things that are handed down, never, never entered the picture though they might have been very important.
If our children are unable to voice what they mean, no one will know how they feel. If they can’t imagine a different world, they are stumbling through a darkness made all the more sinister by its lack of reference points. For a young person growing up in America’s alienated neighborhoods, there can be no greater empowerment than to dare to speak from the heart — and then to discover that one is not alone in ones feelings.
All of us have moments in our childhood where we come alive for the first time. And we go back to those moments and think, This is when I became myself.
Being Poet Laureate made me realize I was capable of a larger voice. There is a more public utterance I can make as a poet.
There is always an emotional element to anything that you make.
We are the music-makers, And we are the dreamers of dreams, Wandering by lone sea-breakers, And sitting by desolate streams. World-losers and world-forsakers, Upon whom the pale moon gleams; Yet we are the movers and shakers, Of the world forever, it seems.
So I think I'll say the obvious thing: theater is ephemeral. When a production is done, it's gone forever. You can take pictures of it. You can make a film of it. But it's not the production. It's not the same thing.
When you start to think of the arts as not this thing that is going to get you somewhere in terms of becoming an artist or becoming famous or whatever it is that people do, but rather a way of making being in the world not just bearable, but fascinating, then it starts to get interesting again.
Fiction is burdened for me with a sense of duty.
My wish is to be known only thru my work.
