The magic doesn't come from within the director's mind, it comes from within the hearts of the actors.

I'm a storyteller; that's what exploration really is all about. Going to places where others haven't been and returning to tell a story they haven't heard before.
Interpretation
Exploration is about discovering new places and sharing those unique experiences through storytelling.
In this quote, James Cameron emphasizes that the essence of exploration lies in the act of storytelling. He suggests that true exploration involves venturing into uncharted territory and returning to share those experiences with others, revealing stories that have yet to be told. This perspective highlights the intertwining of creativity and adventure, portraying explorers as narrators who offer new insights and tales about the world beyond familiar boundaries.

The magic doesn't come from within the director's mind, it comes from within the hearts of the actors.
To convince people to back your idea, you've got to sell it to yourself and know when it's the moment. Sometimes that means waiting. It's like surfing. You don't create energy, you just harvest energy already out there.
I tend to like strong female characters. It just interests me dramatically. A strong male character isn't interesting because it has been done and it's so cliched. A weak male character is interesting: somebody else hasn't done it a hundred times. A strong female character is still interesting to me because it hasn't been done all that much, finding the balance of femininity and strength. [From a 1986 Fangoria interview]
But failure has to be an option in art and in exploration - because it's a leap of faith. And no important endeavor that required innovation was done without risk. You have to be willing to take those risks.
Pick up a camera. Shoot something. No matter how small, no matter how cheesy, no matter whether your friends and your sister star in it. Put your name on it as director. Now you're a director. Everything after that you're just negotiating your budget and your fee.
Every time you dive, you hope you'll see something new - some new species. Sometimes the ocean gives you a gift, sometimes it doesn't.
I say 'spectacle' rather than 'story' because in the end, it isn't the intricacies of narrative that draw us to horror films. When it's there, I'm grateful for the director's skill at telling an exquisitely nuanced tale filled with psychological insight, but it is the spectacles that I take home with me.
Creativity is a wild mind and a disciplined eye.
You know, be an actor because you love to act. Don't be an actor because you think you're going to get famous, because that's luck.
There's nothing worse than an ostentatious shot or some lighting that draws attention to itself, and you might go, 'Oh, wow, that's spectacular.' Or that spectacular shot, a big crane move, or something. But it's not necessarily right for the film β you jump out, you think about the surface, and you don't stay in there with the characters and the story.
Painting, like poetry, selects in the universe whatever she deems most appropriate to her ends. She assembles in a single fantastic personage, circumstances and features which nature distributes among many individuals. From this combination, ingeniously composed, results that happy imitation by virtue of which the artist earns the title of inventor and not of servile copyist.
An artist observes, selects, guesses, and synthesizes.
