People think of poetry as a school subject... Poetry is very frustrating to students because they don't have a taste for ambiguity, for one thing. That gives them a poetry hangover.

I think what gets a poem going is an initiating line. Sometimes a first line will occur, and it goes nowhere; but other times - and this, I think, is a sense you develop - I can tell that the line wants to continue.
Interpretation
A strong first line in poetry can inspire the entire poem's creation.
Billy Collins emphasizes the importance of the initial line in poetry, suggesting that it can serve as the spark that ignites the creative process. He notes that sometimes a line may lead nowhere, but other times, it resonates with potential, leading to a greater flow of thoughts and ideas, revealing the intimate relationship between inspiration and creativity in poetry.

If you write a letter of resignation or something with an agenda, you're simply using a pen to record what you have thought out. In a poem, the pen is more like a flashlight, a Geiger counter, or one of those metal detectors that people walk around beaches with.
Botox should be banned for actors, as steroids are for sportsmen. Acting is all about expression; why would you want to iron out a frown?
Each period of a civilisation creates an art that is specific in it and which we will never see reborn. To try and revive the principles of art of past centuries can lead only to the production of stillborn works.
It's a bit naff, but there is something exciting about pulling a bit of pottery out of the ground that's 2,000 years old.
I could paint for a hundred years, a thousand years without stopping and I would still feel as though I knew nothing.
I would like to paint the way a bird sings.
A story is not like a road to follow... it's more like a house. You go inside and stay there for a while, wandering back and forth and settling where you like and discovering how the room and corridors relate to each other, how the world outside it altered by being viewed from these windows.
