Elizabeth GilbertRead
I wonder if I am capable of being somebody’s sun, somebody’s everything. Am I centered enough now to be the center of somebody else’s life?
Interpretation
The quote reflects on the desire to be a significant presence in someone else's life.
Elizabeth Gilbert expresses a deep introspection regarding her ability to play a pivotal role in someone else's life, akin to being their 'sun' or 'everything'. This contemplative question not only highlights the importance of self-awareness in relationships but also explores the idea of mutual support and connection in love.
In practice
This quote can be shared during a romantic dinner to express your feelings.
You know the old adage: Plant an expectation, reap a disappointment.
Do not apologize for crying. Without this emotion, we are only robots.
I had always been taught that the pursuit of happiness was my natural (even national) birthright. It is the emotional trademark of my culture to seek happiness. Not just any kind of happiness, either, but profound happiness, even soaring happiness. And what could possibly bring a person more soaring happiness than romantic love.
When I tried this morning, after an hour or so of unhappy thinking, to dip back into my meditation, I took a new idea with me: compassion. I asked my heart if it could please infuse my soul with a more generous perspective on my mind's workings. Instead of thinking that I was a failure, could I perhaps accept that I am only a human being--and a normal one, at that?
And when you sense a faint potentiality for happiness after such dark times you must grab onto the ankles of that happiness and not let go until it drags you face-first out of the dirt - this is not selfishness, but obligation. You were given life; it is your duty to find something beautiful within life no matter how slight.
But never again use another person's body or emotions as a scratching post for your own unfulfilling yearnings.
I love who I am, and I encourage other people to love and embrace who they are. But it definitely wasn't easy - it took me a while.
To die for lack of love is horrible. The asphyxia of the soul.
Here we stop. Upon the threshold of wedding nights stands an angel smiling, his finger on his lip.
Through love scraps of copper are turned to gold.
The brooks flow to their lover, the sea, and the flowers smile at the object of their passion, the light. The mist rolls down to its beloved, the valley. And I? In me is what brooks do not know, what flowers do not hear, what the mist does not apprehend. You see me alone in my love, solitary in my yearning.
l am not resigned to the shutting away of loving hearts in the hard ground. So it is, and so it will be, for so it has been, time out of mind: Into the darkness they go, the wise and the lovely. Crowned With lilies and with laurel they go; but I am not resigned.
