You know the old adage: Plant an expectation, reap a disappointment.
Elizabeth GilbertRead
Love renders all of our plans and all of our hopes a gamble.
Interpretation
Love makes our future uncertain and unpredictable.
In this quote, Elizabeth Gilbert expresses the idea that love introduces an element of risk into our lives, transforming our aspirations and plans into a gamble. When we invest in love, we expose ourselves to uncertainty and can never fully predict the outcome, which makes our hopes intertwined with the unpredictable nature of relationships.
In practice
This quote can be used in a wedding speech to highlight the unpredictability of love.
You know the old adage: Plant an expectation, reap a disappointment.
Do not apologize for crying. Without this emotion, we are only robots.
I had always been taught that the pursuit of happiness was my natural (even national) birthright. It is the emotional trademark of my culture to seek happiness. Not just any kind of happiness, either, but profound happiness, even soaring happiness. And what could possibly bring a person more soaring happiness than romantic love.
When I tried this morning, after an hour or so of unhappy thinking, to dip back into my meditation, I took a new idea with me: compassion. I asked my heart if it could please infuse my soul with a more generous perspective on my mind's workings. Instead of thinking that I was a failure, could I perhaps accept that I am only a human being--and a normal one, at that?
And when you sense a faint potentiality for happiness after such dark times you must grab onto the ankles of that happiness and not let go until it drags you face-first out of the dirt - this is not selfishness, but obligation. You were given life; it is your duty to find something beautiful within life no matter how slight.
But never again use another person's body or emotions as a scratching post for your own unfulfilling yearnings.
And let the winds of the heavens dance between you.
You don't want to live your life and then meet someone. You want to share your life with someone. That's what I'm missing right now.
Love feels no burden, regards not labors, strives toward more than it attains, argues not of impossibility, since it believes that it may and can do all things.
Irrespective of age, we mourn for those loved and lost. Mourning is one of the deepest expressions of pure love.
We tend to lack humility toward love, to patronize it rather than bow before it, to put mundane considerations before the emotional need to hold someone in our arms.
To reach out to you when I'm in need, and to try to be here for you when you need me back. And to feel such tenderness when I look at you that I want to stand between you and all the world: and yet also to lift you up and carry you above the strong currents of life; and at the same time, I would be glad to stand always like this, at a distance, watching you, the beauty of you.
